Just DO Something

Updated: Aug 21, 2022

Have you ever had an idea for a new business or project you’d like to get off the ground or a goal you’d like to reach but you just can’t seem to make it happen?

Recognise any of these thoughts?

‘I just don’t have the time’

‘If only I knew what I was truly passionate about then I would put 100% into working towards it’

‘What if I create something and no one likes it?’

‘I just need to wait until the right time, then I’ll start my project’

‘I just don’t know where to start. There’s too much to do!’

Unfortunately thoughts like these are common and they tend to overwhelm us and stress us out. As a result, we end up doing nothing. By doing nothing we reinforce the self talk that says we’re not capable, not good enough, can’t learn and don’t have the time.

I've found the best way for me to break out of this exhausting mental game is to do rather than just think. Taking action leads to change. And that’s what we’re looking for, a change.

But what action should you take?

It doesn’t have to be anything drastic. It might be as simple as taking 10 minutes out of your day to research that course you want to do. Or it could be going for a short walk if exercise is your goal. Writing a few headlines for future blog posts, finally sending that email you’ve been sitting on for weeks, or finding a networking group in your area focused on your topic of interest.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t know exactly what action you should be taking. Sometimes you need to throw mud at the wall and see what sticks. The main point is that you’re doing. You’re making some progress, you’re changing your routine. Even if your action seems completely unrelated to the goal you’re trying to achieve, just doing something different can give you a hit of inspiration!

Doing can be a great way to learn. If you realise that the action you took is not the right direction for you, at least you’ll have tried something and you’ll have learnt from that experience.

Taking some kind of action is better than taking no action at all. Small steps equal progress. And small steps add up. If you take the time to do this regularly you’ll start to see results.

So set your intentions and get started! What’s one small action you can do today to get you closer to your goals?
